Phil’s knowledge and experience at the coalface of the independent creative arts industry has been a consistent reassurance to me, always on hand to talk through any questions or predicaments and if anyone is looking to know how to navigate the financial side of things in the creative arts – something often overlooked – Phil has been there and done that.

Phil is a brilliant person to work with. He is supportive, clear and has infinite knowledge on so many aspects of producing theatre projects. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Phil as a student and throughout my career to date, and it is always a joy. In particular, attending his ITC Finance session was fantastic. The tasks and resources were pitched perfectly and he included everyone in the session, no matter their experience level.

I’ve worked with Phil in two capacities. Firstly, he mentored my colleagues and I – when we were very young and green – in the practical realities of how to establish a theatre company. Secondly, I attended his financial management training. In both, he was exactly what you would want from a facilitator: warm, friendly, insightful, and able to take complex and dull concepts and turn them into creatively stimulating problems to solve. He has changed how I think about budgets forever.

From my first meeting with Phil, I knew he was the right person to facilitate a writing and productivity retreat for the University of Birmingham Alternative Academic Network. Phil is a great guy with an eye for detail mixed with a creative spark that brought our session to life.

One of the things that really impressed me is that he provides a complete package: from working with me and a colleague to plan the event (including a deep-dive to understand the network and identify participants’ needs), to delivering the event (including offering a series of coaching sessions for individuals built into the day) and then offering post-event check-ins as part of an accountability pledge.

Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and I’ll be asking Phil for more help in the future.

Phil’s support through my DYCP application was exceptional. His expertise in Arts Council funding is outstanding, but it’s the depth of his facilitation that makes the real difference. He helped me clarify my artistic voice and articulate my ideas with precision and confidence. I not only secured funding, but came away with a far stronger sense of who I am as an artist. We worked with Philip in a consultation capacity as part of an internal organisational review to support us to explore the structure of The Play House, future options for company growth, what we currently do well, and where we could develop. The caring and in-depth approach Philip took allowed us to explore challenging realities and move forward with a larger piece of organisational development work. Philip’s techniques allowed us to think outside the box in terms of who we are and what we want to achieve whilst being supported every step of the way.

Phil mentored me as part of a DYCP in 2025. The sessions were transformative for me, as an artist and as a person. Through forensic attention to detail and diligent advice, I began to look at my work through new eyes. He helped me build confidence in myself and my work, whilst equipping me with the skills to put my ideas into action. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Philip has supported our training and development programmes by delivering bespoke sessions for researchers. His sessions are always informative, useful and thoroughly enjoyable to take part in. His passion and commitment for developing audience-led experiences, that are accessible to all is inspiring and helping our team and our colleagues develop our own practice.
